Description
Battelle, Pacific Northwest Division, Management & Operating Contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), is requesting information from prospective offers to provide: Helium Ion Microscope Helium ion microscope is an advanced technique based on a revolutionary, atomic size, gas field ion source. This capability is currently not available at the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), a Department of Energy (DOE) national scientific user facility located at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). The ion probe offers a number of unique capabilities. This includes (1) the highest recorded spatial resolution (down to 0.25 nm) for secondary electron imaging, (2) the ability to examine non-conducting samples (primarily biological samples) without a need for conductive coatings, and (3) topographic features being focused simultaneously over a depth range. With increasing research efforts on high aspect ratio nanostructures and biological samples from the user community and our clients, we desire an instrument with a larger depth-of-field than that offered by the conventional scanning electron microprobe (SEM). In addition to the high-quality imaging, we also require a capability of performing Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) with a nanometer or sub-nanometer beam size. A local, non-destructive (relatively) compositional (quantitative) analysis based on the nanometer probe is expected to have a significant impact on the advancement of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The combination of the unique imaging and analytical capabilities provides a new tool to support users working in various thrust areas closely tied with DOE critical missions, including environmental science, biology, chemistry, energy and materials science. The He+ ion microscope we are seeking should offer the following features: (1) High-quality imaging of nanostructures and biological samples with a sub-nanometer spatial resolution (2) Capability of performing RBS with a sub-nanometer He+ ion probe (3) Small beam energy spread (±1 eV) and small beam current variation (< 2%) over the time of data collection (4) Facility to introduce reactive gases for in-situ chemical reaction studies (5) Provision to develop ion-beam induced luminescence capability (6) Availability of 2 or 3 vacuum ports for future capability enhancement, such as surface science related capabilities and addition of a sample processing chamber In addition, we require ease of operation and windows operated user interface and controls. EMSL being a user facility, the instrument supplier should offer user friendly training, high durability and excellent technical, engineering support to minimize the down time. Interested firms shall also provide information in the following areas as available: 1) A description of current experience, knowledge and capabilities directly applicable to the performance of the scope identified. 2) Brochures providing descriptions of equipment, maintenance and standard warranty, along with a current published commercial pricelist. This Request for Information (RFI) is part of a market research effort that will best address PNNL's needs. This RFI is issued for information and planning purposes only and does not constitute a solicitation. Battelle does not intend to award a contract on the basis of this RFI, or to otherwise pay for information received in response to this RFI. Please provide your expression of interest to the attention of the points of contact listed above. If you have questions or need additional information, they must also be submitted in writing to the points of contact.
