Market Survey Description Linear Impact Sled Description of Intent: THIS IS A MARKET SURVEY REQUESTING INFORMATION IN SUPPORT OF THE FOLLOWING POTENTIAL REQUIREMENT. No contract will be awarded from this announcement. This is not a request for proposal (RFP) or an announcement of a forthcoming solicitation, nor is it a request seeking contractors to be placed on a solicitation mailing list. Response to this market survey is voluntary, and no reimbursement will be made for any costs associated with providing information in response to this survey and any follow-on information requests. Data submitted in response to this market survey will not be returned. No solicitation document exists at this time, and calls requesting a solicitation will not be answered. The purpose of this announcement is to locate and identify any interested sources capable of providing all of the hardware and supplies as identified under Linear Impact Sled (LIS). The U.S. Army is seeking to identify vendors with the capability to provide test equipment for Linear Impact Sled testing. Objective: The U.S. Army is interested in improving the survivability of its current and future vehicle fleet against threats from landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), explosively formed projectiles (EFPs), and kinetic energy rounds. Protection of vehicle occupants against these threats is of prime consideration. The Army needs lightweight vehicles to meet mobility and deployability requirements. Design of lightweight vehicles to meet the conflicting requirements of survivability, mobility and deployability is very challenging. To meet this challenge, crew protection components are optimally designed and extensively tested in the laboratory before integrating into overall vehicle design. Potential Requirement: To this end, we want to set up a linear Impact Sled (LIS) stand-alone simulator to test crew protection equipment such as seating systems, interior padding, floor solutions, etc. in order to assess the effect of forces which simulate the forces applied to a vehicle from the above mentioned explosive threats. The stand-alone simulator will be housed in an enclosed building with a standard ceiling height of 10 feet. The LIS stand-alone simulator must be capable of testing technologies that may be floor-, side-, or ceiling-mounted and, if possible, with two or more seats at once. It is preferred that the LIS uses a renewable resource mechanism to catch or stop the sled, and not use a one-time energy absorbing system such as aluminum honeycomb, etc. Provide details of the proposed mechanism(s) used to catch or to stop the sled and details of the energy source used for accelerating the sled. Provide total weight of the sled and the space needed for all of the various parts including sled, track, decelerating mechanism, and energy source for acceleration. Provide technical details such as peak force generated, peak g-force, max velocity, max energy, sled size, and max payload weight and size. Provide estimated total cost of the LIS and any associated equipment. Provide details on safety mechanisms used to prevent accidental injuries. The LIS should be capable of replicating pulses ranging from standard automotive side impact to side IED events. It should have interchangeable platforms for floor-, side-, and ceiling-mounted seating systems. It should have an off-axis loading capability. The device should not use live explosives.
