Description
The National Data Buoy Center intends to negotiate only with Teledyne RD Instruments, Inc. of Poway, CA for the following: 0001: 4 Each 75 KHz Longranger with pressure sensor (2000m), standard housing, 356 MB memory 0002: 1 Each 1200 KHz ADCP with 2000m pressure sensor, 6000m depth rated housing and 256 MB memory 0003: 2 Each 1200 KHz ADCP with 200M Pressure Sensor, standard depth rated housing and 256 MB memory 0004: 2 Each 300 KHz ADCP with 200M Pressure Sensor, standard depth rated housing and 256 MB memory. This sole source justification is for the procurement of ADCPs for the use in the Hawaii Munitions Dump Site Monitoring Project. This site is expected to have very low currents and will incorporate sites that are both shallow water and deep water in which the whole water column of data will need to be captured. These two sites are also expected to be deployed in a self deployed mode for an extended period of time 6 months at a time before servicing due to the costs of service vessels. For these reasons it is important for the sensors to be able to produce data with low noise relative to the flow (i.e. a small standard deviation in the returned samples) with a small power requirement to meet the extended deployment time frame. Presently, broadband technology meets these needs by having approximately 50x "clearer" data per single pin than the competing narrowband technology (i.e. a narrowband sensor would need to ping significantly more frequently to meet the same level of confidence in the data as a corresponding broadband sensor thereby consuming significantly more power). Presently, Teledyne RD Instrumnents is the only manufacturer of broadband technology ADCPs. Due to the fact that this data will be incorporated into a model, NDBC would like to ensure that the same technology and level of confidence is present in all of the sensors in the array.
