- Description
- This requirement is for the lease of casks and services associated with loading those casks with Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) from Domestic Research Reactors (DRR) and other SNF storage facilities. Only U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) owned SNF will be handled under this requirement. The inventory to be loaded includes mostly Training, Research, Isotopes - General Atomic, (TRIGA) fuels; and, for the first years of shipments, is approximately 400 SNF elements from a minimum of four (4) separate DRR facilities, including Oregon State University, Washington State University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Arizona. To facilitate packaging and transportation of the SNF, all radioactive materials packaging to be used must meet the regulatory requirements of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Hazardous Materials Regulations. Characteristics of the SNF require type B fissile packaging. The proposed package must be a Department of Transportation (DOT) authorized type B fissile package, as evidenced by its NRC Certificate of Compliance (C of C). The selected package must also meet all established receipt facility requirements at the IFSF.
