Description
Perk Grindstone Unit 5 Mastication: The contractor shall furnish all technical expertise, labor, equipment, supervision, transportation, operating supplies, and incidentals necessary to complete the work required. The bidder is advised to visit the worksite to determine average cut trees per acre prior to submitting a bid. The bidder is responsible for determining the amount of work. Bids will be reviewed by a committee and award will be made upon selection criteria defining the best benefit to the government. This contract is designed to reduce hazardous fuels, and restore public lands. The Perk Grindstone Mastication Project is described in the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Perk-Grindstone Fuel Reduction Project.. The project will contribute to the central priority of restoration of fire-adapted systems by reducing intensities of wildfires, especially in the wildland urban interface (WUI) as well as Public lands, and restoring natural ecologic processes across a range of forest vegetation types. Additionally, the project would provide forest products to the local community and enhance watershed conditions (i.e., water quality and quantity). The project areas are within dense stands of mixed conifer, ponderosa pine, and ponderosa pine associated woodlands that are at high risk of stress-induced bark beetle attack, as well as a risk of wildfire. This thinning will enhance residual tree vigor and thus reduce the chances for tree mortality. Treatment of the resulting woody debris and slash will make the residual stand more fire resistant into the future and begin to restore natural function and sustainability. To accomplish these goals, this project includes treatment by mastication. Although burning is not apart of this Contract, many areas treated by this Contract is a preparatory step toward its use.
