- Description
- The Indian Health Service (IHS) intends to enter into a no cost contract with SureScripts, LLC, for access to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange. Under the proposed agreement, electronic prescription messages sent from the IHS Resource and Patient Management System (RPMS) to pharmacies that contract directly or indirectly with SureScripts may only be transmitted through the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange. IHS will retain the right to use non-electronic prescription methods and may enter into contracts or agreements with other similar exchange network providers subject to the limitations described herein and the necessary testing and validation. IHS developed e-prescribing capability for RPMS as part of its project to achieve certification of RPMS by the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT). CCHIT certification of RPMS is a mandated activity for IHS. Electronic prescribing is an identified business need for Indian Health Service and Tribally-operated health care facilities that are the principal users of RPMS. The ability to transmit electronic prescriptions to retail pharmacies in virtually every state requires access to the Pharmacy Health Information Exchange operated by SureScripts.
