Description
The National Park Service is seeking the services of a historic paper conservator to provide professional paper conservation for the Truman Home at Harry S Truman National Historic Site, Independence, Missouri. The conservator must demonstrate skill in wallpaper removal, cleaning, repair and reinstallation to return the historic appearance to all spaces being treated during these projects. Conservator must demonstrate membership in good standing with the American Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works (AIC). It is anticipated an Architecture and Engineering (A/E) team will be in the park in May 2008 to review the Truman structure and begin design and construction documents for a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and fire sprinkler systems. Design and construction documents will identify locations for the ductwork and sprinkler system installation. Wall and ceiling papers must be removed in designated locations to preserve the historic wallpaper and to allow access to plaster and provide openings for the installation of the systems. In order to preserve and install wallpaper, the services of a paper conservator will be required to remove the wall and ceiling papers in advance of this project work. The locations designated for wallpaper removal require close coordination and cooperation with maintenance and cultural resources staff to ensure the least possible compromise to the historic appearance of the home interior. The paper and plaster work requires coordination with the A/E team and recommendations provided to the installers of the HVAC and fire sprinkler systems. It is critical to ensure that if specific paper removal areas of these systems overlap plaster project work that it is known to all parties performing work to prevent unnecessary opening and work to interior surfaces. The National Park Service preserves the home in appearance consistent with the appearance of Harry and Bess Truman's occupation of 219 North Delaware. Wallpaper conservation work will be required on both the first and second floors for the Truman home of the HVAC and fire sprinkler systems. The primary focus for the plaster and wallcovering will be on locations on the first floor where plaster and paper are compromised. The work must be accomplished on a tight deadline and short notice will be required to complete the project work throughout the contract. The conservator and conservation studio should be in close proximity to the historic site to respond to construction contractors and to ensure good response time to meet project timetables. Wallpaper samples are required to be safely transported by the conservator to the studio where the work will be performed. Conservator is responsible for providing specialized boxes to safely transport wallpapers to and from the site. The complexity of the project requires that the conservator be readily available and familiar with the different types of papers and plasters and adhesives utilized during the historic period in order to understand the unique problems likely to be encountered during the project. This is a treatment project to preserve and protect historic fabric-and the intrinsic cultural value and historic association for a Presidential home and therefore an irreplaceable heritage asset. The NAICS code will be 711510. The Service Contract Act will apply.
