- Description
- The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Detachment Norfolk ( Code 23- Combatant Division) is requesting information regarding processes to harden water jet impeller blades to increase their resistance to impact damage from stones and other miscellaneous intake debris. The US Navy operates small combatant craft designed to transport troops along inland waterways and deploy them along unimproved shorelines. This requires operating the craft in very shallow waters where contact with bottom debris can not be avoided. The craft employ commercially manufactured twin water jet propulsors. Operations of the craft in shallow water have shortened the life of the stainless steel impellers as a result of increased debris flow past the impeller. Sand and small rocks wear away the impeller over time and decrease the efficiency of the impeller as a result. Wear of the impeller blades is the leading maintenance item affecting craft availability. Lengthening wear l ife would allow reduction in spares inventory and Mean Time to Repair. In order to prolong the life of the impellers and decrease the maintenance demands, it is proposed to investigate methods to avoid debris impact events, to improve the erosion resistance of the stainless steel blades, or to investigate alternative design approaches to increase the operational life of the blades. It is requested that companies submit their proposals for solution approaches, including amplifying information related to past experience, applicable product or process brochures, complete technical specification/data sheets, and any independent assessment results currently available. Responses should be emailed to Scott Petersen at scott.m.petersen@navy.mil. Responses should be received no lated then 5 FEB 2008.
