Description
STATEMENT OF WORK DENTAL ASSISTANT Dental Service, VA Medical Center, Washington, DC The Dental Assistant performs a wide range of intra-oral dental procedures under the direction of the general dentist and specialist, and provides chairside assistance in the Dental Service, VA Medical Center, Washington, DC. He/she possesses the skills and knowledge to assist the dentist in General Dentistry as well as when assigned to one of four specialty areas: Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Periodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Certification is required. The Dental Assistant performs the following duties: 1. Prepares the equipment and instruments required for each procedure, including anesthetic agents. 2. Assists in assuring patient comfort and safety during each procedure by properly seating the patient in the dental chair, providing eye protection when indicated, and continually observing the patient throughout treatment for signs of medical complications. 3. Retracts soft tissue to improve visualization of procedures. 4. Evacuates blood, saliva, fluids and debris from the mouth and surgical site. 5. Anticipates the armamentarium required during each procedure and efficiently passes the appropriate instruments to the provider to expedite the procedure and maintain appropriate infection control. 6. Assists in medical emergencies by procuring emergency equipment, medications, and oxygen and applying the techniques of Heart Saver or Health Care Provider CPR. 7. Enters pertinent patient data at the direction of the treating dentist in the electronic patient record. Initiates and facilitates the informed consent process using the automated system. 8. Makes dental impressions, pours study models, and trims casts. Constructs and modifies custom impression trays. Constructs, adjusts, and cements temporary crowns and bridges. 9. Educates the patient about the anticipated procedure, provides oral hygiene instructions, and delivers post treatment instructions including the care and maintenance of prosthodontic appliances. Verifies that the patient understands the dentist's post treatment care instructions and checks the patient's general condition and assists the patient as needed. 10. Communicates with patients, families, and caregivers in person, via mailed correspondence, and telephonically to schedule appointments and address concerns and questions. 11. Obtains dental extraoral and intraoral radiographic images using a digital dental imaging system. 12. Maintains the dental operating suite and its supplies, instruments, and equipment. Performs regular inspection and maintenance of dental equipment to optimize functionality and cleanliness and reduce downtime. Continually monitors dental supplies in the dental operatory and restocks as necessary. Reviews dental supplies for expiration dates and removes expired items promptly to maintain patient safety. 13. Maintains the cleanliness of the dental operatory in accordance with VHA and Medical Center infection control policies and procedures. Prevents the transmission of blood borne pathogens and the contamination of dental supplies by the application of appropriate barriers and techniques. Properly disposes of contaminated expendable supplies, materials, and hazardous wastes after patient care. Disinfects dental equipment and environmental surfaces following patient care. Cleans and decontaminates dental instruments using an instrument washer/disinfector, properly prepares instruments for sterilization, sterilizes instruments using a steam sterilizer, and labels sterilized instruments packs and bags with the run number and date following Dental Service, Medical Center, and VHA policies and procedures. Assures that impressions and other material with the potential to transmit pathogens are disinfected prior to transport to the dental laboratory.
