Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Geographic Medicine and Health Promotion Branch, Division of Global Migration and Quarantine (DGMQ), Travelers? Health Team has responsibility for a textbook for health-care providers, Health Information for International Travel (the ?Yellow Book?). The Yellow Book, also available in its entirety online, has long been considered the ?gold standard? of travel medicine, both in the United States and abroad. Information contained in the Yellow Book is heavily relied on by health-care practitioners, travelers, the travel industry, and others who advise travelers, and is frequently cited in medical as well as non-medical publications, including news media such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. The production team for the Yellow Book continues to work towards creating a resource that contains current health recommendations for international travel, delivered in a user-friendly format that can be readily applied in the clinical setting. The book is published every two years, with the most recent book (Yellow Book 2008) published in May 2007. DGMQ?s objective is to make the 2010 version of the Yellow Book more useful for and more targeted to US travel medicine and general healthcare practitioners. DGMQ is seeking the services of a physician expert in travel medicine to serve as a Medical Editor (ME) for the 2010 edition. It is expected that the scientific and technical contribution of the ME to the 2010 edition would result in increased usability of the book by the 40,000 US general healthcare practitioners and 2000 travel medicine specialists who are asked to provide pre travel advice to patients planning international travel and who see patients after they return from travel. Services required will be as follows: 1) Review 2008 Yellow Book; 2) Formulate vision for 2010 Yellow Book; 3) Develop instructions for authors; 4) Develop Table of Contents for new edition; 5) Identify subjects for special box commentaries; 6) Identify additional external authors; 7) Liaise with external authors; 8) Write selected chapters; 9) Write special box commentaries; 10) Edit 1/3 of the chapters; 11) Liaise with publisher after submission; 12) Develop marketing strategies for increased distribution; 13) Book promotion after publication. The cycle of production for the next version (Yellow Book 2010) began in September 2007 and will be completed when the 2010 book is published in May 2009. It is expected that the overall time spent on the project by the ME will be approximately two months per year for two years. The ME will not be required to work at CDC; the work can be done from home, but travel to CDC or other locations will be expected several times a year to meet with CDC staff. A best value request for quotations for these services will be issued on or about 28 December 2007 with award anticipated on or about 30 January 2008. All responsible sources will be invited to submit proposal which shall be considered by the agency.
