Description
The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. ("AURA"), acting as the operator of the Gemini Observatory, is seeking a vendor with electronics, control systems and software expertise to complete the design, fabrication and software development for its Laser Bench Beam Stabilization (LBBS) system for the Gemini South Laser Guide Star Facility (LGSF) in Chile. The main components of the LBBS system include: two piezo-electric tip/tilt mirror platforms mounted on the Gemini South laser bench to control the direction of propagation of the laser output beam; two position sensing devices (PSDs) mounted about 8 meters away further down the laser beam path on the Gemini South telescope to measure the laser beam pointing and centering; a control system to close the loop between the PSDs and the tip/tilt platforms; and all associated electronics and software necessary to run the system. The successful vendor will review the current state of the LBBS design, complete the electronics, software and controls design, procure missing LBBS hardware, develop the corresponding control software and assemble and test the complete LBBS system at their facility prior to delivery in Chile for integration with the Gemini South Laser Guide Star facility. Minimum requirement for the software part of the LBBS system is to be EPICS-based and follow the standard Gemini software architecture.
