Description
The Marine Corps Systems Command has an urgent requirement for a 120mm MP-HE cartridge to be fired from the M1A1/M1A2 tank platforms and will provide a multi-purpose capability. The cartridge will be a line-of-sight, fin stabilized munition that incorporates three operational modes into a single round. The all-in-one operational capabilities of this round will reduce logistical requirements by replacing tank rounds currently in stock; thus simplifying ammunition requirements within the M1A1/M1A2 platform. The 120mm MP-HE cartridge will be capable of one extraction remaining in a serviceable condition when the breech is opened manually after chambering throughout the operational temperature range (Threshold) and five extractions (Objective). It will be safely loaded (onboard the firing platform), chambered, extracted, and re-stowed (if required) IAW TM 9-2350-264-10, Chapter 2, without damage to the round or degradation to performance, and without exposing the crew t o an increase in vulnerability compared with existing fielded ammunition (Threshold=Objective). In addition, the cartridge will fit within the current ammunition compartments within the M1A1/M1A2 tank and must be of such size and weight as to allow the loader to properly handle the round (Threshold = Objective). The 120mm MP HE round must meet operational performance requirements within operating ranges of -25F (-32C) to +145F (63C) after having been stored within the temperature range of -51F (-46C) to 145F (63C) (Threshold) or extreme range of -59F (-51C) to + 160F (71C) (Objective). When the round is fired with propellant temperature of 145F (63C) to 160F (71C) or -25F (-32C) to -59F (-51C) it will not endanger the crew (Threshold) or damage equipment (Objective). Finally, the 120mm MP-HE cartridge will be fired from all current platforms without degradation of the capability of the round for vehicle equipped with an operational hard-wired, NATO standard two-way data link (Threshold = Objective). The modes of operation will include point detonating (Threshold), delayed detonation (Objective), and Airburst (Objective). The 120mm MP-HE cartridge will provide these functions at all ranges up to 4000m (Threshold) and 5000m (Objective). The 120mm MP-HE round will provide the ability to address multiple target types within line of sight with one weapon. Target sets to be addressed will include bunkers, wall breeches and vehicle targets from unarmored through light armored (threshold); massed infantry, ATGM or crew served weapon crews (objective). The 120mm MP HE round must be capable of breaching a 30? by 50? hole in a 8? reinforced concrete wall with no more than 3 rounds for 0-45 degree obliquity and no more than 5 rounds for 46-80 degrees obliquity. (Threshold = Objective). The 120mm MP HE round must be capable of defeating an earth and timber bunker (collapse) or incapacitate 2 of 4 personnel inside the bunker with no more than 2 rounds (Threshold) and 1 round. (Ob jective) The 120mm MP HE round must be capable of defeating light armor (BRDM) and civilian truck type vehicles, given a hit, at 2 kilometers (Threshold) and 4 kilometers. (Objective) Collectively, the attributes provided by this cartridge will counter a broader target set and increase lethality and survivability with improved blast fragmentation on an array of target sets including wall breaches, light armor, bunkers, massed infantry and Anti-Tank Guided Missle (ATGM) teams.
