- Description
- Background: The use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the identification of potential bioagents outside of a typical laboratory setting has become an integral part of biodefense and biosecurity measures. This tool has the capability to detect the presence of specific nucleic acids at low levels, which frequently infers the presence of target organism. This presumption can be further strengthened if the genetic sequence of the PCR product (amplified fragment) is determined. DNA sequencing is currently a labor intensive process that must be performed in a laboratory, and this capability is not available for field-use.
