- Description
- The Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) began a project in 2005 to convert its network database management system (IDMS) to a modern relational management system (DB2). This project is expected to be completed by September 2007. The RRB?s body of data was redefined to fit the new DB2 management system. This resulted in the development of data tables containing data that used to be stored independently in each application. Some data, particularly identifying information, existed in each separate database, having separate sources and uses. The new environment houses all the data in tables that co-exist in the same environment, making comparisons easy and apparent redundancy noticeable. While the conversion itself is expeditious, it does not address the duplicate data which will become very apparent and will counteract the efficiency of the new relational database management system. The RRB is seeking sources to provide data optimization services which will include, but not be limited to, eliminating multiple representations of the same data, redefining data that is apparently the same but has subtle differences, and documenting the data.
