- Millar Fire Restoration, San Diego NWR, CA: Our objective is to restore the wildlife habitat function and value of the burned area. Specific objectives supporting this larger objective include: 1. prevention of loss of soil through erosion; 2. prevention of vegetation type conversion from coastal sage scrub to non-native grassland; 3. replacement of floristically diverse coastal sage scrub vegetation community; 4. replacement of habitat function and value for endangered, threatened, and sensitive species listed above. Our specific goals with respect to erosion control are: 1. to retain topsoil on the site; 2. to prevent siltation of the riparian area downhill; and 3. to prevent the formation of eroded gullies, or deepening of existing gullies. Our specific goals with respect to seed collection are: 1. to gather a sufficient amount of a diverse collection of native seed, representative of the area that was burned; and 2. to store that seed until it is appropriate for USFWS to distribute it on the burn site. Our specific goals with respect to weed control are: 1. to deplete the soil seed bank of exotic weed seeds; 2. to minimize the replenishment of that seed bank by killing exotic weeds before they can disseminate seeds; and 3. to maximize potential for growth and reproduction of planted and naturally occurring native plants by reducing competition for resources.
