Description
Idaho National Laboratory, managed and operated by Battelle Energy Alliance is offering the opportunity to license and commercialize the technology. The INL would like to identify industrial partners capable of providing funds-in and cost share towards development of low-cost aluminum oxynitride (AlON). The INL seeks parties interested in production of low-cost aluminum oxynitride. Technology: The INL has demonstrated and is further refining a novel process to form aluminum oxynitride by a pressureless sintering method. Thie INL approach has the potential to reduce costs for manufacture of AlON enabling use of this material in transparent armor applications for commercial and military use. Development Status: The INL has currently developed some samples for testing. INL has filed a patent application covering the invention and is evaluating a second invention disclosure for a second patent application. Benefits: A pressureless sintered aluminum oxynitride with comparable ballistic performance to hot pressed AlON that is made by a simplified processing method. Transparent aluminum oxynitride ceramic offers the potential of ballistic protection with a commensurate weight savings compared to traditional glass/polymer-based transparent armor. Additionally, this affordable manufacturing process would enable the production of low-cost aluminum oxynitride for use in a variety of transparent armor systems to protect against bullet and explosion, i.e. cars, trucks, helicopters, fighter jets, and windows. THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies and/or interested parties who feel they are capable of performing this project are invited to indicate their interest by providing the INL a brief summary of their capabilities, including brief description of facilities, personnel, and existing manufacturing experience as it relates. Please provide your written statement of interest within 30 days from the date this announcement is published to ensure your consideration.
