Description
Sandia National Laboratories, one of the lead research and development laboratories for the Department of Energy's pulsed energy needs, is looking for one or more companies to engage in commercialization of Sandia's technology for modification of materials by the application of pulsed ion beams. The technology is made up of a repetitively pulsed ion beam system with a high energy pulsed power source and an ion beam generator capable of producing high voltage ion beams (0.25-2.5 MeV) made up of a single species at 1-1000kW average power and over extended operating cycles (108cycles). Irradiating materials with such high energy, repetitively pulsed ion beams can yield surface treatments including localized high temperature anneals (even to melting) followed by rapid thermal quenching to achieve novel and typically unachievable physical characteristics in the near surface layer of materials. It is expected that successful partners will license Sandia's existing technology and will effectively commercialize the technology without assistance from Sandia. Because of this expectation, potential partners must document their ability to move similar products to market and demonstrate they have the resources and expertise to design, develop, manufacture, market, and service fully functional ion beam systems. Sandia anticipates granting one or more licenses, up to and including exclusive rights, to qualified partners. Sandia licenses typically include up-front fees, royalties, annual minimums, and performance milestones. Rights are available to one issued patent (USP #RE37,537, "Method and apparatus for altering material") related to the pulsed ion beam apparatus. To express your interest in this technology transfer opportunity, please respond by mail or fax to Paul Smith by August 29,2007 at: Sandia National Laboratories,MS 0114, P.O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87185-0114. Fax (505) 844-8011. Please indicate the date and title of the FBO notice and describe the manner in which your firm will successfully bring the materials modification system to market. This is not a federal government procurement and therefore there will be no debriefing regarding the results of Sandia's selection process.
