- Purpose & Need: The purpose of this project is to suppress current infestations of the Neptyia junetae , and prevent the spread from NFS lands onto both Village property and private property adjacent to the Village of Cloudcroft NM. Proposed Action: In order to prevent further defoliation in currently infested and adjacent stands, the Lincoln National Forest proposes to treat a portion of the affected National Forest System lands adjacent to private property in the vicinity of Cloudcroft, New Mexico. The total acreage within the project area is approximately 5000 acres. Based on research and consultation with regional entomologists and pesticide applicators, the preferred control agent has been determined to be Bacillus thuringiensis var.kurstaki (Btk), a naturally occurring bacterium. Application would be done from the air and could begin as early as late fall, 2007. This time period coincides with the active feeding period of the Nepytia caterpillars but would be after the Sacramento Mountain checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas anicia cloudcrofti) has entered its diapause, or dormant phase. If post suppression monitoring determines that the fall application is not successful in reducing the Nepytia population, a second application would be conducted in the spring of 2008, while the Nepytia caterpillars are still active, but before the checkerspot butterfly emerges from its dormancy. A pre-application survey of the checkerspot butterflies will be conducted prior to spraying to determine their activity level.
