- The Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) intends to issue a sole source contract to West Virginia University Research Corporation for the continued support of the Northern West Virginia High Speed Optical Network (HSON) in accordance with the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) Part 6.302-1 Only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements. West Virginia University Research Corporation is the sole provider for the HSON. The HSON was established by the SuperComputer Science Consortium (SC^2) members (through a cooperative effort, operated and supported through the West Virginia University Research Corporation). The HSON connection is from the Pittsburgh SuperComputer Center/Carnegie Mellon University (PSC/CMU), Pittsburgh PA to the West Virginia University (WVU), Morgantown WV and a connection to NETL. NETL has a requirement to continue to maintain a high speed communication link to the Pittsburgh SuperComputer Center GigaPoP. The communications link is required to support computer modeling and simulation work performed by NETLs Office of Research and Development. WVU is the only known vendor in the Morgantown area with a dedicated communications service to the PSC/CMU GigaPoP. It is expected that this contract will include a base period of 16 months and two 12 month option periods.
