Description
The National Institute on Aging, IRP, intends to negotiate and award a purchase order on a noncompetitive basis with the Regents of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48109 for a project ?Statistical Genetic Analyses of Data from the SardiNIA Project?. The contractor will perform a detailed analysis of candidate genes selected for follow-up after the first phase of the study. This will include haplotype analysis and other analyses to evaluate the evidence for multiple independent variants in each gene; analysis of follow-up genotyping in ProgeNIA cohort. It will also include the assessment of the results of follow-up genotyping and their comparison with initial study results; cataloguing of common copy number polymorphisms, and in particular, deletion variations in Sardinia and initial analysis of case-control studies, using ProgeNIA cohort participants who have already been genotyped as controls. Only one responsible source and no other supplies or services will satisfy agency requirements, 41 U.S.C. 253 (c) (1), FAR 6.302-1 (b) (1). The cited authority is applicable because the University of Michigan is the only source that can fulfill the requirement of this contract. Research methods to be provide through this project include the development of program that will adapt MERLIN and other quantitative statistical programs developed by Dr. Abecasis, Univ of Michigan, to the very large and complex pedigrees in the Sardinian population, and to use a combination of low and high density single nucleotide polymorphism data to identify genetic variants that account for the genetic variance of quantitative traits and risk factors. Dr. Abecasis is internationally recognized as a leader in the development and application of algorithms for heritability, linkage, and association analyses, including applications to ?founder? (relatively less outbred) populations. The programs he has developed have become universally used in the last several years, making him eminently qualified to apply and modify them as necessary for the study of the Sardinian population. A survey of the literature in this field and recommendations from investigators doing related research show that there are no other sources for these services. The period of performance is 12 months. The North American Industry Classification (NAICS) is 541990 and the size standard is $6.5 million. This acquisition is being conducted under Simplified Acquisition procedures and is exempt from the requirement of Far, Part 6, Competition Requirement.
