- The George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center of the Department of State is the federal government's primary training facility for personnel of the foreign affairs' community. The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) is the Department bureau that provides training for employees of the Department of State and other agencies at the Shultz Center. FSI offers more than 425 courses. The Institute is comprised of a number of schools/centers that include the School of Professional and Area Studies, the School of Language Studies, the School of Applied the School of Leadership and Management, Information Technology, and the Transition Center. The School of Professional and Area Studies orients new State Department and other USG employees to the foreign-affairs environment; provides high-quality job-related training for Foreign and Civil Service personnel in the Administrative Management, Consular, Economic, Political, and Public Diplomacy areas; improves the professional skills and abilities of Department of State Office Management Specialists and Office Support Personnel; enhances functional and management skills of the Foreign Service National staff; and provides employees of foreign affairs agencies knowledge about foreign countries and regions and an understanding of American interests and policies related to those countries and regions. The Economic and Commercial Training Division of SPAS trains employees to function effectively in economic jobs abroad and in the Department of State and other USG agencies. FSI/SPAS/ECON requires services for a contractor to deliver the remaining two of three sessions of a 5-day course on Commercial Tradecraft during Fiscal Year 2007. The contract will be renewable at FSI's option on an annual basis for as many as three sessions per year for Fiscal Years 2008 through 2010. A design for this course is available at FSI.
