Description

The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) intends to issue an Order under NAVAIR Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) N00019-05-G-0026 to procure services and materials to accomplish the design and flight worthiness testing (FWT) of a form/fit/function, retrofittable digital heads-up display (DHUD) flight demonstration unit on the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet (USN/FMS). Additionally, the procurement may include options for further qualifications testing. The current Heads Up Display (HUD) in the F/A-18 is a critical flight instrument. When the HUD is inoperative, the aircraft is non-mission capable until the HUD is repaired. The DHUD will replace the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) with a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) projection engine backlit by a solid-state high-intensity lamp system. High power components are not used therefore enhancing reliability of the system. This effort will provide necessary integration and FWT in preparation for a DHUD demonstrator flight test in the F/A-18 test aircraft. NAVAIR intends to negotiate this Order on a sole source basis with McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MDC), a Wholly Owned Subsidiary of The Boeing Company, St. Louis, MO 63166-0516. MDC is the sole designer, developer, manufacturer and supplier of the F/A-18 Weapon System and only MCD has the F/A-18 peculiar engineering data, capability, resources, and expertise required to fulfill NAVAIR's requirements.
