- The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is pleased to announce a series of tests for evaluating the state of the art in latent fingerprint matching algorithms. The intent of the testing is to quantify the algorithmic capability of contemporary matchers with the goal of providing automated assistance to latent examiners. Specifically, NIST will test search performance using automated latent feature extraction methods that do not use human markup of the latent images. The testing will be conducted using software-only implementations. The initial test is scheduled for the February-March 2007 timeframe. ***** Vendors of AFIS systems with a latent fingerprint search capability are encouraged to participate. Academic institutions with an executable latent matcher are also welcome to participate directly in the test. Comments are welcomed from all sectors of the latent community. This is strictly a special notice that is being published to reach a wider audience.
