Description
USAID’s Last Mile Initiative, now present in twenty-five USAID countries, redefines the idea of the “last mile” barrier to include overcoming two constraints: • Overcome geographic isolation by launching an irreversible revolution in the sustainable provision of ICT services to rural areas, partnering with both international and local private sector interests to connect rural customers to the world; and • Overcome economic and social isolation by transforming the development prospects of farming, small businesses and new start-ups through IT-driven increases in productivity. LMI is designed to support broader Mission objectives such as competitiveness, rural development, workforce development, and peace & democracy because up-to-date information and reliable and affordable communication is essential for development and USAID priorities. LMI also supports delivering USAID programming to rural sites. While ICTA is supporting the Nanasala roll-out, there are several ways in which USAID can add value by enabling the private sector to deliver ICT and development services through LMI centers. USAID/Colombo seeks to target areas in strategic locations including areas where USAID is presently operating. One example may be where the Government of Sri Lanka Vocational Technical Authority (VTA) schools are being built under the USAID Tsunami Reconstruction Program. Further, USAID sponsored LMI centers should not be built where ICTA funded Nanasalas currently exist or are planned in the short-term (next 12 months).
