- The U.S. Geological Survey, Central Region Mineral Resources Team (CR-MRT) has a requirement for a large spot capable laser ablation system to be utilized on the PerkinElmer ELAN 6000 ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer) and the PerkinElmer ELAN DRC-e ICP-MS. This is a mission critical piece of equipment for the continued advancement of methods development and applications central to the goals of the team. This system is differentiated from other systems already operated in the laser ablation laboratory (CR- MR T) in that it will have the capability of spot sizes up to 10 times larger than conventional laser ablation systems (up to 1200 J.Ull vs. 120 to 200 J.Ull). These larger spot sizes will allow direct determination of trace elements in solids down to concentrations less 1 part per billion. The system must have the capability to be run in a routine, fully- automated fashion on the existing USGS owned PerkinElmer ELAN ICP-MS systems and other modem ICP-MS instrumentation available on the market today. The large spot capable laser ablation system will be used for studying trace elements in bulk powders of geological materials (rocks, ore, coal and others). The system will deliver improved detections limits for these materials. In some cases the detection limits possible by a large spot capable laser ablation may rival detection limits by conventional methods and a large spot capable system is the only type of laser ablation system with such capabilities. The laser ablation system needs to meet the following requirements: I) Be a fully enclosed Class 1 laser system 2) Deliver laser pulses in excess of 20 mJ of 266 nm from a 300 mJ IR laser 3) Deliver aperture imaged spots up to 700 pm in diameter with defocused spots up to 1200 pm and spot size range down to less than 50 pm 4) Include a integrated software package with video imaging from a frame grabber 5) Be capable of closed contact or TTL triggering with all brands of ICP-MS systems available on the market today. Based on information available at this time and in accordance with 41.U.S.C. 253? (1), implemented by FAR 6.302-1, the Government considers the supplies/services specified as a sole source from: New WaveResearch, Inc., 48660 Kato Road, Fremont, CA 94539, the manufacturer of Universal Platform UP266 MACRO System, and proposes to negotiate a contract with that firm on that basis. However, should additional sources be identified, they will be considered. Firms who feel that they can furnish the required services or its functional equivalent (based upon the criteria specified herein) are invited to submit in writing an affirmative response to this announcement. A affirmative response would include literature, brochures, and such other materials which correspond to the required items stated herein. This information will be evaluated and used to determine if competitive opportunities exist. Sin no solicitation document exist, request for such document without accompanying information will be considered non-responsive to this request without further consideration. This notice may represent the Government's only official notice of this procurement.This requirement will only be process to the point of award, funds are currently not available for this requirement.
