Description
The U.S. Geological Survey, Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center, La Crosse, WI has a requirement for a side scan sonar system in order to study fish habitat use in the Mississippi River. The bottom of the Mississippi River is predominately composed of sand with some silt. Waves form in the sand substrate, called dunes, are created by river currents and radiate perpendicular to the direction of flow. Dune heights can range from a few centimeters to two meters. It is hypothesized that fish use these dunes to avoid higher current velocities and possibly to acquire food. USGS scientists are hoping to use side scan sonar to identify fish position along the bottom of the Mississippi River in relation to these dunes structures. (1) Scanning Environment: Depths: working depths in the Mississippi River range from 1.5 11 m, typically 3-6m , Survey Speeds: 3 knots, could accommodate slower survey speeds, Water Surface: wave heights generally <0.5m and often times 0m, should provide for greater platform stability but will negatively affect multi path echoes. (2) Target (Fish) Information: Dimensions 6-40 cm x 15-150cm, Location : 0-1.5m above river bottom, Density: soft tissue and air bladder, Orientation: typically parallel to flow (and track) direction (3) System Requirements: Range : narrow, area of interest <20m, likely in the 10m range, Range Resolution: maximized, ideally able to separate targets with 5-10 cm separation, Transverse Resolution: maximized, ideally able to separate targets with 5-10cm separation (4) USGS- Provided Equipment: state of the art laptop computers, differential GPS units, some data acquisition software (already possess a license for Hypack software) THIS AWARD WILL BE MADE UNDER THE SIMPLIFIED ACQUISITION PROCEDURES. The anticipated award date is 06/12/2006. NAICS is 334511. Request for Quotation No. 06ERQQ0043 will be available at the following website: www.ideasec.nbc.gov <http://www.ideasec.nbc.gov>. If you have difficulties accessing the solicitation using the website, call the National Business Center Electronic Commerce Help Desk at 703-390-6633. Responses are due by 06/07/2006. Fax quotes may be sent to 703-648-7367: Attn: Alfred Benton. Question may be sent to Alfred Benton at abenton@usgs.gov. This procurement is a total small business set-aside. See numbered note 1
