NAICS Code: 541710 THIS IS A PRE-SOLICITATION SYNOPSIS FOR STUDENT SERVICES TO BE AWARDED ON A CONTRACT BASIS BY THE US ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY. The solicitation number is X3C423 (RFQ-RT-06-00093). The Neurotoxicology Division (NTD) of the National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL), Office of Research and Development (ORD) at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking a pre-doctoral level student to provide services under a contractual agreement to assist in neuroimmunotoxicology studies. The student must be at least 18 years of age, and have completed a BA/BS degree in organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, environmental science, biology, toxicology, pharmacy, physiology, or neuroscience. An understanding of biochemical assays, cell culture technique sterile techniques and analytic chemistry, is desirable. The student contractor shall work with cell culture preparations exposed to various nanosize particles; The student will be responsible to help in the maintenance of a sterile cell culture laboratory. This will involve making sterile culture media, aliquoting different fluids, sterilizing equipment, cleaning of incubators, water baths, biological hoods, organizing and stocking of supplies etc. they will learn to isolate and measure RNA's from various types of cells in preparation for genomic analysis; perform assays using various fluorescent indicators of oxidative stress; microscopic evaluation using cool frame photography, de-convolution software; data graphing; macro formulations for spreadsheets. The student shall perform duties, as requested, according to specifications and instructions provided by the mentor. Where appropriate, the student shall maintain careful and accurate records in designated laboratory notebooks. These notebooks and all other data produced under this order will be the property of the Environmental Protection Agency. The contract period of performance will be for 12 months (starting on or about June 1 2006). It is anticipated that the student shall work 20-35 hours per week during a Monday through Friday of each week, for a not-to-exceed total of 1,000 hours for the 12 months. There will be an option of an additional year. The duty location is the Neurotoxicology Division, NHEERL, 109 TW Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park, NC 27711. Work will be performed under office and/or laboratory settings. Laboratory health and safety training will be provided by the EPA. The student contractor is responsible for all costs of transportation to and from the principal duty station location. EPA does not provide housing, meals or other living expenses while working at the principal duty station. The hourly rate of $15.00 is commensurate with the level of education and experience necessary for this position. The student contractor will be paid the basic hourly rate only for the number of hours worked. The student contractor does not accrue leave or holiday benefits and is not paid for any non-work days, regardless of the reason. Federal, State, and Social Security taxes will not be withheld; student contractors are responsible for reporting income to authorities and paying all taxes. Student contractors are responsible for all costs of transportation to and from the principal duty station location. EPA does not provide housing, meals or other living expenses while working at the principal duty station.
