Description
The U.S. Geological Survey, Volcano Hazards Team (VHT) in Vancouver, WA intends to make a sole source award to Nanometrics Inc, 250 Herzberg Road, Kanata Ontario Canada, for a COMMERCIAL Item. The USGS Volcano Hazards Program (VHP) and its components, which include the VHT and Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO), installs and operates geophysical monitoring stations at volcanoes throughout the world. Recent eruptions in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), a U.S. Territory with 9 active volcanoes, have demonstrated the requirement for volcano monitoring to address potential threats to people living on the volcanic islands as well as to domestic, international and U.S. military aviation interests. The equipment being purchased by the VHT is compatible with that being used by the AVO and will allow for a common pool of spare parts to maximize the interoperability of VHT and AVO personnel who must install and maintain these complex systems in remote environments, and to implement the CNMI monitoring system in a manner consistent with the volcano and tsunami monitoring systems already in operation. Satellite coverage in the CNMI is sparse, and is limited to C-band transmission and reception. Nanometrics has recognized expertise in operating real-time telemetered seismic networks in the western Pacific region with satellite C-band telemetry. Further Nanometrics is the only company known to be providing a turn-key, fully integrated system optimized for transmission of seismic data, and providing for a dedicated private circuit that would work in this remote region.
