Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY OPTICAL IMAGE STITCHING Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to license and commercially develop our optical image stitching technology for creating broad area imaging arrays. Background: Researchers at LLNL have developed an image stitching technology that can seamlessly stitch the output of multiple digital image sensors together into one seamless, contiguous image. This permits the use of multiple cameras to create a much larger ?virtual? image sensor array. Description: This technology permits the simultaneous generation of single images of objects without the need to move the object or to record multiple images at different times. This technology joins multiple sensors together to form a larger pixel count ?virtual? sensor array. The technique used for this process efficiently produces continuous images from the independent digital image sensors that can be joined without complex computer processing. The technique uses an optical phenomenon described in Theodor Scheimpflug?s 1904 British Patent (GB 1196/1904) to use a set of focal plane arrays and lenses, arranged in such a manner to produce an image that is equivalent in picture elements (pixel) count to the sum of the arrays optically joined, minus a small amount for overlap between adjacent focal plane arrays. Advantages: It is possible to use this technology with many commercially available digital image sensors. This technology is useful wherever there exists a need for an image sensor that is larger in pixel count than anything commercially available. This technology is beneficial in reducing the cost per pixel by using readily available, relatively low-cost large-area image arrays to replace limited production, high-cost per pixel very large image arrays. Potential Applications: This technology is not limited to visible light imaging system applications, but also can be applied to infrared, ultraviolet, microwave or x-ray imaging regimes. Any imaging or sensor application where the pixel count needed exceeds those of a single sensor can employ this technology. Development Status: LLNL is in the process of patenting this invention. LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPAC website at: http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's Image Stitching technology should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 121-06 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's Image Stitching technology.
