Description
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, COE, is building a scale model the of the Bonneville Dam Powerhouse II turbines to assess the impact turbine designs have on passing fish. The Contractor shall design, construct and supply a 1:25 scale model of a Bo nneville powerhouse II Kaplan Turbine Runner, approximately 335 mm blade tip diameter, including a blade adjusting mechanism. The dimensions and geometry for the scaled hydraulic surfaces shall be determined by the Contractor based on the Contractors fie ld measurement of a full size Bonneville turbine. All parts exposed to immersion shall be made of corrosion resistant metal. Model drawings, a model measurement report, a model installation and operations manual, and a computer file containing surfaces s uitable for computational fluid dynamics, CFD, modeling shall be provided. The Government shall have the option of inspecting the finished model runner at the Contractors facilities. The model turbine components shall then be prepared by shipping and sh ipped to the Governments Waterways Experiment Hydraulic Laboratory in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The Contractor supplied components shall interface with Government supplied model components consisting of a model headcover, model discharge ring and motor dri ve shaft. The Government model is a clear plastic open channel hydraulic model, which is used to determine the velocity profiles in the turbine water passageways. The test results will assist the COE in defining the requirements for replacement fish frie ndly turbines. The testing is part of the turbine survival program, TSP, a multifaceted program focused on investigating ways to improve the survival of Salmon as they pass through Kaplan turbines throughout the Columbia and Snake River systems. Business size standard is 500 employees.
