Description
TECHNOLOGY/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY HIGH-ENERGY FIBER LASER AND AMPLIFIERS Opportunity: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to engage in cooperative research to develop and commercialize new fiber laser technology. Background: LLNL is an acknowledged leader in the design and fabrication of short-pulse high-energy lasers, and in recent years has devoted considerable effort to developing versions of these that take advantage of optical fiber technologies. Such lasers are more robust and efficient than their bulk-optic predecessors, though the fiber damage threshold tends to limit their output pulse energies. LLNL has designed fibers having large effective areas to mitigate the damage issue, and is currently developing new high energy fiber lasers and amplifiers based on their techniques. Description: LLNL is seeking to jointly research and develop for commercialization both high-energy lasers and amplifiers based on their optical fiber designs. The Researchers are currently testing fiber-based amplifiers that can create and sustain nanosecond-scale pulses having energies up to 1.0 mJ and plan to scale to 10 mJ pulses in the future. Development Status: LLNL currently has prototype designs for novel high-energy fibers and novel high-energy fiber amplifiers, both for 938nm and 1080nm, which LLNL can demonstrate to an interested industry partner. LLNL is seeking industry partners with a demonstrated ability to bring such inventions to the market. Moving critical technology beyond the Laboratory to the commercial world helps our licensees gain a competitive edge in the marketplace. All licensing activities are conducted under policies relating to the strict nondisclosure of company proprietary information. Please visit the IPAC website at http://www.llnl.gov/IPandC/workwithus/partneringprocess.php for more information on working with LLNL and the industrial partnering and technology transfer process. Note: THIS IS NOT A PROCUREMENT. Companies interested in commercializing LLNL's high power fiber and fiber laser amplifiers should provide a written statement of interest, which includes the following: 1. Company Name and address. 2. The name, address, and telephone number of a point of contact. 3. A description of corporate expertise and facilities relevant to commercializing this technology. Written responses should be directed to: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Industrial Partnerships and Commercialization P.O. Box 808, L-795 Livermore, CA 94551-0808 Attention: FBO 124-06 Please provide your written statement within thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is published to ensure consideration of your interest in LLNL's high-energy fiber lasers and amplifiers.
