Description
The USDA, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), intends to solicit bids for 42 Katahdin wether lambs, 42 crossbred wool-type wether lambs (Suffolk, Hampshire or Dorset sired crossbreds, or another crossbreed acceptable to USDA-ARS in Beaver, West Virginia), and 42 Boer wether goat kids. These animals shall be furnished and delivered, FOB destination, to the USDA, ARS, Appalachian Farming Systems Research Center (AFSRC) research site in Bragg, Raleigh County, West Virginia. Pending availability of funds, the contract shall cover one base year and four option years. All animals must be born within the same 30-day time period of each other (for example, born between February 1 to March 1, 2006; February 15 to March 15, 2006; March 1 to April 1, 2006, etc.), and must weigh between 45-55 pounds. Weights of individual breeds will vary, but weights within a breed must be within a 10-pound spread (i.e., if the average weight of the breed group is 50 pounds, then animals within that breed group must weigh between 45 and 55 pounds; if the average breed weight is 55 pounds, then animals within that breed group must weight between 50 and 60 pounds). All animals must come from the same area of the country and have been raised in similar management environments. Characteristics: Katahdin lambs must be of like genetics and as uniform as possible, with 100% Katahdin genetics. Crossbred traditional wool-type lambs must be of like genetics (Suffolk, Hampshire or Dorset sired crossbreds or another crossbreed acceptable to USDA-ARS-AFSRC) and as uniform as possible. Boer meat goat kids must be like genetics and as uniform as possible, with at least three-fourths Boer genetics. All animals must be: Castrate males (no stags), castrated between birth and one month of age and healed. Source-verified (limited to only one farm source) Have an ear tag with identifying number. Have the USDA tag identifying the farm or origin as part of the National Scrapie Identification Program. Not implanted with growth-promoting hormones. Be of uniform weight, limited to a 10-pound spread. Of calm and tractable nature. From similar backgrounds as far as location, rearing, handling, nutritional/feeding management and health care. Must have the following vaccinations prior to weaning and boostered: Clostridial (Clostridium perfringens types C and D (overeating disease) and Clostridium tetani (tetanus). Vaccinations/injections must be given in the neck of the animal in accordance with current industry guidelines/practices. Out of a flock with an active external and internal parasite control plan in effect, and dewormed prior to delivery. Upon delivery, must be healthy with no overt signs of disease, and free of injury, active lameness, respiratory disease, warts, pinkeye and ringworm. Minimal stress due to shipping. Animals must not be on the truck/trailer longer than five (5) hours from original place of origin. Animals must be weaned prior to transport and accustomed to eating hay and concentrate. Animals should not be over-conditioned from creep feeding.
