Description
This requirement is for a new high precision supersonic wind tunnel Model Injection System (MIS) mechanism shall be fabricated, shop assembled and tested, disassembled and shipped to site, installed and tested at the site. A detailed design and specification package for the MIS will be provided by the Government. The demolition of an existing MIS mechanism is also included in this contract The demolition and installation work shall be performed at Arnold Air Force Base, Tennessee. The new MIS mechanism is a high precision positioning system used to locate and orient test models in supersonic tunnel test section under a wide variation of aerodynamic loads. The overall dimensions of the new MIS are 18'-4" high x 5'-5" wide x 9'-10" long and it weighs approximately 15,000 lbs. The MIS consists of multiple components and equipment. Some of the key fabricated and machined components are described below. The axial frame is a large welded and bolted structure that requires accurate machining of long surfaces. Four linear rails bolt directly to the axial frame and must be oriented in near perfect parallelism, the machining of the rail mounting surfaces is critical. The frame sections measure approximately 15 ft x 7 ft and require machining accuracies of 0.003? on some surfaces. The sector assembly contains the Carriage Segment Gear which is a curved track with an integral gear segment. It is a highly precise part with a radius of approximately 7 ft. The 12 diametral pitch spur gear segment contains 2000 teeth. The edges of the track are precision ground with case hardened surfaces for the pitch carriage rollers to ride upon. The roll mechanism is a high torque, highly precise gear box. It requires precision machining and grinding of round parts (turning) with required accuracies as rigid as .0003?. The MIS also includes control systems such as the balancing system and associated air circuit components, control cabinets, and control feedback devices The demolition and installation work shall be performed in an existing pressure tank located below the wind tunnel test section. The pressure tank is a welded steel pressure shell with the approximate dimensions of 14?L x 10?W x 25?D. All demolition and installation materials must be removed from the tank thru an existing door which is approximately 72? wide x 79? high and is located at an elevation of 14? above the bottom of the tank. All work shall be completed within 15 months after contract award. For more information on "Model Injection System", please refer to: http://www.pixs.wpafb.af.mil/pixs_solicitation.asp?id=4136
