Description
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires an upgrade to a Ti:Sapphire laser that was recently purchased. The upgrade is required in order to undertake a newly funded competence project. In order to obtain larger pulse energies, NIST requires a ?cavity dumper?. The cavity dumper reduces the pulse repetition rate, but increases the pulse energy. Higher pulse energies are required in order to enable efficient ?second harmonic generation,? also known as frequency doubling, which is a nonlinear process that generates light at twice the wavelength of the input light. The Ti:Sapphire laser that NIST will upgrade is a Coherent Mira 900-D. This product is a highly specialized laser which only Coherent is capable of providing a cavity dumper with a second harmonic generation option designed specifically for this laser. NIST also requires a pump laser for this Ti:Sapphire laser, and Coherent will only guarantee that the cavity-dumped Ti:Sapphire meets its specifications if it is pumped with a Coherent laser. NIST requires at least a 50 nJ/pulse (wavelength of 800 nm) with a pulse width 100-175 fs at a repetition rate of > 100 kHz. The upgraded T:Sapphhire laser is required to meet all of the following specifications: 1) Pulse energies > 50 nJ/pulse from 800-900 nm wavelength, at pulse repetition rates up to 100 kHz 2) Pulse repetition rates from single shot to 8 Mhz or greater if possible 3) Required pump laser input 5 W at 532 nm 4) Pulse width 100-175 fs 5) The second harmonic generation must have an efficiency of at least 35%. All of the necessary components required to upgrade the existing Ti:Sapphire laser, including a pump laser and second harmonic generation equipment, must be included. There is no bid package available. The Government intends to negotiate, on a sole source basis, with Coherent, Inc., Santa Clara, CA, under 41 USC 253(c)(1), ?Only one responsible source?. This notice may represent the only official notice of a solicitation. See Note 22.
