- The U.S. assistance program in Haiti supports United States? national security interests. The development landscape is one of the most challenging in the world. While other countries in the region with similar development profiles thirty-five years ago have achieved middle-income status, Haiti remains the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. With a turbulent political history, frequent changes of governments, an extraordinarily high concentration of economic wealth, and a citizenry that lacks both confidence and trust in its public institutions, Haiti faces challenges that few nations of the 21st century know. Consequently, the U.S. Government has made substantial financial investments for many years in the country?s development, particularly in the areas of economic growth, democratic institutions, health (including the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS), food security, disaster mitigation, and humanitarian assistance.
