Description
DARPA Announces ?Armor Challenge,? SN06-13 The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency?s (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) is continuing to invest in improving passive vehicle armor materials and systems. To identify promising new armor systems for military vehicles, DSO is conducting an ?Armor Challenge? aimed primarily at inventors and small organizations who do not have the resources to initiate full-scale armor development programs. DARPA?s Armor Challenge invites proposals for novel armor designs based on the requirements and specifications described in detail on the Armor Challenge website, http://www.directedtechnologies.com/DARPA_ArmorChallenge.html. Participants in the Armor Challenge will be selected based on the criteria listed at the website below. Selectees will be invited to send test samples of their novel armor designs to Directed Technologies, Inc., (DTI), Arlington, Virginia. DTI is a Scientific, Engineering and Technical Advisor (SETA) contractor to the Defense Sciences Office and is bound by appropriate non-disclosure agreements. Funding will NOT be provided for Research and Development, but DTI will reimburse selectees for the cost of manufacture and shipping of the samples. Through DTI, DARPA will fund all ballistic testing at an independent laboratory to ensure that armor performance is judged consistently by an objective organization operating with recognized and objective standards. Samples that demonstrate superior performance against one or more threats, or that incorporate a particularly innovative design feature, will be considered by DARPA for further development. Details regarding program planning and objectives, as well as guidelines for proposal preparation, submission and evaluation, may be found at the Armor Challenge website, http://www.directedtechnologies.com/DARPA_ArmorChallenge.html. Proposals will be accepted beginning February 20, 2006, and continuing through August 31, 2006.
