Description
It is the intent of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to procure professional support services for the Specialized Information Services (SIS) on a sole source basis from Mr. Edward J. Burns, Altamonte Springs, FL. SIS plans to provide support to MR. Burns to build on specialized expertise as a Technical Lead in the development of the Mozilla WebClient Project, and expert familiarity with the Mozilla/FireFox browser. The purpose of this agreement is to develop a browser plug-in for the Mozilla/FireFox browser that will be capable of performing meta-searching and clustering of search results from heterogeneous information sources with the same basic functionality as ToxSeek. This new browser plug-in will considerably reduce the infrastructure, bandwidth and processing requirements of ToxSeek searches. Historically, the Specialized Information Services Division (SIS) of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has developed specialized search technologies to provide access to heterogeneous information resources. Increasingly, useful and reliable information of interest to NLM/SIS is available on the World Wide Web via Web-accessible databases outside of NLM/SIS. In order to continue its role as a focal point for providing access to toxicology and environmental health information of high quality and currency, NLM/SIS is pursuing R & D projects for the more effective utilization of distributed information resources in support of its mission by utilizing advanced server-based meta-search and search result clustering technologies as exemplified in the ToxSeek system. The contractor has highly unique and specialized expertise in Mozilla WebClient development as the Technical Lead on the Mozilla WebClient Project. Mozilla WenClient is a critical component of the ToxSeek Java application system for interactions with the Mozilla Firefox browser.
