- Description of Work- The Jemez Campground Forest Health ? Paliza Campgrounds Stewardship Project is located on the Jemez Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest. The project area lies within and adjacent to the Paliza Group and Family Campgrounds, accessible via Forest Road 10. The project area centers around two popular campgrounds located within dense stands of ponderosa pine that are at high risk of drought-induced bark beetle attack, as well as a risk of wildfire. The primary purpose of the project is to improve stand health by reducing the overall stand density by up to 50%. This thinning will enhance residual tree vigor and thus reduce the chances for ponderosa pine mortality from bark beetles. Treatment of the resulting woody debris and slash will both remove the potential attractant to bark beetles as well as making the residual stand more fire resistant into the future. To accomplish these goals, this project includes several different components: timber removal (commercial thinning), precommercial thinning, and slash treatment by decking, chipping or removing.
