U.S. citizens are eligible to participate in this program. Non-U.S. citizens may be eligible to participate, depending on their immigration status and the applicable regulations of the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Service (BCIS,) formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Graduates who are EPA ORD employees, or the spouse or child of an EPA ORD employee, are not eligible to participate. The student contractor shall have completed at least two (2) years of undergraduate study in a chemical engineering degree program, with studies in both physics and chemistry, and have the equivalent of five (5) quarterly credit hours in laboratory coursework at the time of selection. This special project team within NRMRL is completing proof-of-principal experiments for developing and demonstrating a pervaporation approach for the removal of volatile organic chemicals for ground water remediation. This technology is also applicable to any system for the separation of VOC's from water or gas streams. The student will support the effort by performing bench scale tests using an existing laboratory apparatus and standardized procedure. This work is expected to begin approximately September 1, 2005, for period of approximately twelve months, with the work schedule comprising approximately 20 to 40 hours a week, as the student and the project officer may agree, through August 31, 2006. The student may schedule work hours Monday through Friday between 6:30 A.M. and 6:00 P.M., so long as a project member is present. The Principal duty station is the National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Cincinnati, Ohio 45268 The hourly rate of pay is commensurate with the level of education and experience, as follows: $13.19/hr for students who have completed at least two (2) years of undergraduate study, $14.75 for a BA/BS, $18.28 for a BA/BS with 1 year of Grad school, 22.36 for an MA/MS, 27.06 for PhD pre-doc, $32.42 for a Post-Doc. If interested in this opportunity, the student/recent graduate must propose this rate in order for his/her proposal to be considered acceptable. Students will be paid the basic hourly rate only for the number of hours worked and shall receive no differential for work in excess of 40 hours per week. Student/recent graduate contractors do not accrue leave or holiday benefits and are not paid for any non-work days, regardless of the reason. Students who perform under contract to EPA are required to undergo a background investigation consisting of a check of Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) name and fingerprint files, and a suitability determination. Selected graduates will be provided copies of the appropriate forms and instructions on their completion and submission requirements.
