Description
The Forest Service will be accepting proposals for mechanical thinning/mastication for timber stand, fuels, and wildlife habitat improvements on the Upper Lake and Grindstone Ranger Districts of the Mendocino National Forest. Project consists of 2 items. For both items, thinning will be accomplished by selecting and cutting less desirable trees and retaining those that exhibit good growth characteristics such as vigorous growth, no signs of disease, and good position in the canopy. Treatment of the thinned material, competing vegetation and slash differs for each item as a result of varying stand age, tree size and treatment history. Item 1 - Horse Mountain Units: thinning of approximately 238 acres of ponderosa pine plantations. Sawlog size boles will be yarded to landings. Purchase of utilizable material from thinnings is optional, and proposals incorporating this option would receive preferential consideration. Sub-merchantable thinned boles and slash will be yarded to landings for disposal or masticated within work units. Live and dead brush within work units shall be treated if Contractor utilizes mastication. Item 2 - Sullivan Mastication Units: Thinning and release of approximately 48 acres of ponderosa pine plantations. Competing vegetation includes, but is not limited to, manzanita, chamise and buck brush. All excess trees and brush shall be treated by mastication. LOCATION: This project is located on the Upper Lake and Grindstone Ranger Districts of the Mendocino National Forest. CONTRACT TIME: Item 1: 28 months; Item 2: 16 months. Contract time for both items will run concurrently. A maximum of two contracts may result from this solicitation. PRE-PROPOSAL MEETING: A pre-proposal meeting will be held for each Item. Item 1 ? August 24, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. Meet at Upper Lake Ranger Station, 10025 Elk Mountain Rd., Upper Lake, CA . Item 2 ? August 25, 2005 at 9:00 a.m. Meet at Elk Creek Work Center, 3286 County Road 308, Elk Creek, CA. Estimated start work date for both items is September 16, 2005.
