Description
NOAA?s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) has developed a Multi-cultural Education for Resource Issues Threatening Oceans (MERITO). The proposed contract is to develop and provide expanded bilingual outreach and education programs about marine and coastal environments and will effectively inform Latino citizens about marine and coastal environments in central California. Although this action plan will focus on outreach programs for Latino citizens, future education plan will include all culturally diverse groups. The three main programs of MERITO serve to 1. Collaborate with K-12 schools, adult schools and community groups to build upon and foster new community-based outreach for Hispanic youth, adults, migrant families, and community leaders; 2. Collaborate with natural resource management agencies like California Department of Parks & Recreation and National Estuarine Research Reserves to increase visitation by Hispanic youth, adults and migrant families through site-based outreach; and 3. Collaborate with colleges and universities to develop and provide teacher trainings and college internships for Hispanic-serving teachers and undergraduate and graduate level students. The contract will consist of a base year with two additional option years.
