Description
PROSPECT MOUNTAIN FUELS REDUCTION STEWARDSHIP The project area includes 20 acres of an approximately 2500 acres of mixed conifer (Douglas Fir, sub-alpine fir and lodgepole pine) forest on Little Prospect mountain. The project area is approximately 34 miles northeast of Farson Wyoming, 45 miles east of Pinedale, Wyoming, 74 miles north of Rock Springs, Wyoming, and 100 miles southwest of Lander, Wyoming. These stands are currently overstocked, resulting in poor tree vigor, declining forest stand health, are currently experiencing bark beetle damage and high levels of hazardous fuel loading. Present conditions are a departure from the historic healthy forest ecosystem, due in part to fire exclusion. The risk to damaging stand replacement by fire is high. There is one residence (WUI) adjacent to these stands. The prescription calls for removing standing dead and down and any live trees exhibiting bark beetle infestation. Ladder fuels and slash will be lopped and scattered. All products are intended for fuel wood use (biomass). The prescription also will require that 3 to 5 large standing dead trees be left per acre to support the habitat needs of cavity nesting birds. The estimated value of service work is $3000 and the value of products is estimated at $4500. BLM is offering this project as an equal exchange of the thinning service with the value of the product removed. The estimated minimum volume of fuel wood is 45 cords. Geographic Description: South-central Wyoming. The project is located approximately 225 miles north of Salt Lake City, Utah and 180 miles west of Casper, Wyoming. Benefits: Reducing hazardous fuels and improving forest health benefits all species endemic to forested habitats. Forests with stocking levels reduced to historic levels are less susceptible to perturbations either natural or man caused. Adjacent structures will also be more easily protected from wildfire. SITE VISIT: A site visit has been scheduled for July 12, 2005, at 10:00 am. Please meet at the Highway 28 Rest Stop on Sweetwater River (by South Pass). For more information, directions, or alternate site visit considerations, please contact Jim Glennon, BLM- Rock Springs Field Office, 280 HWY 191 North, Rock Springs, WY 82901, or phone (307) 352-0256 SOLICITATION: Solicitation of proposals will be posted at http://ideasec.nbc.gov as document number KAQ051006. The ending date for proposals will be July 22, 2005, with a contract awarded in the week of July 25th.
