Description
There are approximately 1500 abandoned mines located on public lands in the Upper Animas Watershed. Several of these sites have been remediated or partially remediated, while others have yet to be characterized. There is a need for monitoring of sites, and site characterization sampling for purposes of preparing preliminary investigation reports and planning for remedial activities. For the 2005 field season, several sites require monitoring to determine the success of the remedial work already performed. It is necessary to perform monitoring on a timely basis in order to appropriately operate water treatment systems, as well as to determine whether or not additional remedial activities need to be undertaken at other sites. These sites include but may not be limited to: Forest Queen, May Day, Lark, Joe and John, Elk Tunnel, North California Mountian, Eveline, Eureka Channel, Lackawanna, Bonner, the Brooklyn and potentially several other locations that have been acquired from ASARCO and Sunnyside Gold Corp. There also may be some sampling requested that is not routinely scheduled, and sampling may need to be performed on short notice. There are numerous mining related sites on federally managed lands that currently need some level of site characterization. This work will include mine waste, soil, and water sampling, working with geoprobe sample interpretations and core collections, site maps and other reporting requirements. Soil sampling analysis may include, but not be limited to: acid generation potentially, heavy metal leachate potential, heavy metal and mineral concentration, porosity, grain size analysis, and buffering capacity. Water analysis may include measurements for alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, flow rate, hardness, physical properties, total and dissolved concentrations of heavy metals, and mass loadings to the aquatic system. Specific sites that need water quality data collected monthly during the field season are the Henrietta Mine, May Day, Joe and John, Lark, Forest Queen, Elk Tunnel, Lackawanna, and a number of piezometers for groundwater quality. Other sites will be sampled as needed. Deliverables for this project will be sampling and analytical results as required on a monthly basis for monitoring, and an annual report. If interim data reports are received by the contractor prior to the due date of the annual report, they will be submitted to the BLM project manager as they are received. There may also be a site assessment report prepared for data collected for the Eureka Channel feasibility study at a date yet to be determined. There may be travel needed to present findings to interested parties. It is very important for the winning contractor to have experience in surface and groundwater hydrology, water quality data collection, quality control and quality assurance plan preparation and procedures, geoprobe sampling methods and soil sample interpretations, abandoned mining program and restoration procedures and familiarity with the Upper Animas River watershed. For individual bidders a resume should document experience in these areas. For organizations, a statement of qualifications should document relevant experience. The associated solicitation will be issued June 6, 2005.
