- The Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Weather Service (NWS) is in the early planning stages of transitioning NOAA?s Atmospheric Research Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL) to the NWS and is investigating the use of blade server clustering technology for possible application to a new system design to replace antiquated, single-purpose, standard servers that connect to the Internet and other telecommunications interfaces. The objectives of this Request for Information (RFI) are to identify: 1) blade server cluster technological solutions, including the types of blade platforms and blade servers currently available; 2) current telecommunications interfaces for receiving and transmitting giga-byte per second information; 3) disk storage solutions designed for rapid access to large volumes of data, and; 4) software being used by industry to manage blade server clustering technology in a Linux operating environment for performing such tasks as load balancing, distributive backups, recognizing bare metal servers, adding new servers to the cluster, etc. Interested parties are invited to submit responses addressing the objectives shown above. An electronic copy of your response must be emailed to the Contracting Officer at NWSAMD@noaa.gov no later than 11:59 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2005. The electronic copy of your response must be in .pdf format and readable by the Adobe Acrobat Reader. In addition, one (1) hardcopy of your response must be received by the Contracting Officer no later than Friday, July 15, 2005 at 5:00 p.m. PLEASE USE THE FOLLOWING ADDRESS WHEN SUBMITTING THE HARDCOPY OF YOUR RESPONSE: Paquetta N. Following a review of the responses received, the NWS may elect to schedule one-on-one meetings with some respondents to gain additional information about their proposed solution(s). Questions pertaining to this notice may be emailed to the Contracting Officer at NWSAMD@noaa.gov. The deadline for submission of questions concerning this notice is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, June 03, 2005. The responses to all questions received by this date will be posted at http://www.fedbizopps.gov website. It is important that all responses submitted specify, on the cover page of the response or in the transmittal letter submitted with the response, the business size/status of the organization (i.e., large business, small business, certified 8(a) concern, veteran-owned, hubzone, women-owned, etc.). Small businesses who possess the required capability are encouraged to submit responses to this notice. NOTE: This RFI is being issued solely for information and planning purposes and does not constititute an Invititation for Bids (IFB), a Request for Proposals (RFP), a Request for Quotes (RFQ) or an indication that the Government will contract for any of the items and/or services contained in this notice. All information received in response to this notice that is marked Proprietary will be handled accordingly. Responses to this notice will not be returned.
