Description
Description This service project consists of prefelling in the Sixmile project area. The purpose of this project is to enhance wildlife habitat by creating a variety of stand development classes. In addition to habitat improvement, treatments will accomplish hazardous fuel reduction and improve forest health in areas adjacent to Six Mile Creek. Over the last 22 years, 98 percent of all wildfires occurring on the Kenai Peninsula were started by humans (KPB 2004). Implementation of these treatments would substantially reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires being started or carried through these portions of the Chugach National Forest. OBJECTIVES: Pre-felling is necessary to increase the fuel loading to facilitate the Six Mile prescribed burn, which will: Increase early seral hardwoods by prescribed burning. Reduce hazardous fuel loads created by the spruce bark beetle mortality. Enhance vegetative structural diversity and regeneration. SCOPE The purpose of the project is to have the contractor furnish all labor, equipment, fuel, oil, transportation (mobilization & demobilization) and supplies to perform pre-felling work necessary to facilitate the Six Mile prescribed burn on the Seward Ranger District of the Chugach National Forest. The work consists of tree felling, lop and scatter of felled trees and slash, and pruning. Pre-felling will take place in areas east of Six Mile Creek, adjacent to the Hope Highway. The Six Mile project area is accessed by crossing Six Mile Creek, and ferry will likely be necessary. Location and Description T09N; R01W; Sec 35, E ? Sec 34; T08N; R01W; Sec 2, E ? Sec 3, E ?
