- This service project consists of fuels reduction in the Silvertip project area. The purpose of this project is to reduce wildland fire potential near high-use portions of the Seward Highway, provide firefighter safety, and secure a safe ingress and egress route to the Kenai Peninsula. Spruce trees across Alaska have been killed in large numbers by the spruce bark beetle, leaving dead trees across the landscape and a high risk of wildland fires. Over the last 22 years, 98 percent of all wildfires occurring on the Kenai Peninsula were started by humans (KPB 2004). Implementation of these treatments would substantially reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires being started or carried through these portions of the Chugach National Forest. OBJECTIVES: Reduce hazardous fuel loads created by spruce bark beetle caused mortality. Enhance vegetative structural diversity and regeneration. SCOPE: The purpose of the project is to have the contractor furnish all labor, equipment, fuel, oil, transportation (mobilization & demobilization) and supplies to perform manual fuel reduction work on the Seward Ranger District of the Chugach National Forest. Manual fuel reduction will take place in the Silvertip project area, adjacent to the Seward Highway. The work consists of tree felling, piling, and lop and scatter of felled trees and slash. Award of this project to be accomplished under Full and Open Competition, pursuant to the Small Business Competitiveness Demonstration Program.
