- The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Montana Division Office plans to award a purchase order to the Western Transportation Institute (WTI) of the University of Montana to develop a consensus-based, defensible and appropriate ecosystem oriented approach to integrated compensatory mitigation of highway impacts to ecosystems and wildlife populations, benefits, and values in the vicinity of the US Highway 93 Corridor. This will serve as a pilot for an ecosystem approach to mitigation on US Highway 93. The WTI is the only known source that has knowledge of the area, the issues, and the resource personnel required to complete this project. The WTI has been working with the Montana Department of Transportation as well as the FHWA on wildlife crossing research in the US 93 Corridor. Furthermore, WTI has developed the ARTEMIS database, which is the most complete reference resource, focused on animal-vehicle collisions and mitigation options for impacts of highways on ecosystems in North America. Furthermore, one of the core program focus areas at WTI is transportation system-wildlife interaction. There is no other known source that possesses this combined experience and knowledge which is so very important to the completion of this project.
