Description
NOTE: This descriptive area provides an overview of Technical Topic 3. YOU MUST READ THE FUNDING OPPORTUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT FOR DETAILS ON ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, EVALUATION CRITERIA AND HOW TO PREPARE AN APPLICATION UNDER A SPECIFIC TECHNICAL TOPIC. Funding Opportunity Announcement: http://e-center.doe.gov/iips/faopor.nsf/1be0f2271893ba198525644b006bc0be/cb0e4496d1db52fc85256ff100704103?OpenDocument TECHNICAL TOPIC 3 - Clean Fuels Technology This topic centers on research related to the production of premium fuels and products from coal. These fuels and products, and the precursors required for their production, include diesel, jet fuel, and carbons such as pitches or cokes. In addition, technologies related to the economical production and separation of hydrogen will be required to facilitate the use of coal for many of these fuels and products. The fuels of the 21st century will have to satisfy the competing demands of environmental acceptance and engine performance. To be acceptable to the marketplace, engines must deliver the required acceleration, horsepower, reliability, and conformance to specifications. At the same time, cleaner burning fuels will be required to minimize both airborne pollutants and emission of carbon dioxide. Increased emphasis on the control of particulate matter is likely in light of the growing popularity and practicality of diesel engines. A similar set of concerns exists for jet fuels. One type of fuel currently under development and capable of providing such qualities is a next-generation diesel fuel produced via a Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) process. Novel concepts furthering this and/or other approaches to the development of premium fuels and products from coal are sought.
