Description
The Tobacco Control Research Branch (TCRB), located in the Behavioral Research Program (BRP) of the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking a contractor to conduct multidisciplinary research on the interplay of tobacco product type, behavior of product use, chemistry, toxicology, and biology in order to determine the addiction and cancer risk potential of new, potential, reduced-exposure tobacco products. Little is known about the composition of these products, how they are actually used (i.e., alone or in conjunction with conventional cigarettes), their true impact on users? exposure to harmful tobacco and smoke constituents and there is an urgent need for scientific guidance regarding laboratory methods and biomarkers for evaluating toxicity and exposures for individual users of these products. The contractor will conduct studies aimed at the evaluation of exposures to toxic and carcinogenic agents among users of different types of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products, and how they are modified by product type, gender, and ethnicity/race. Major emphasis will be on development and validation of sensitive, specific, and high throughput laboratory methods and their application in large population studies. The major task areas will involve 1) assessment of tobacco product emissions under varying behavior conditions; 2) standardization and validation of laboratory methods and exposure biomarkers; 3) information gathering on toxicity biomarkers; 4) communication of major findings and 5) interaction with Expert Consulting Committee. It is anticipated that one (1) cost reimbursement, completion-type contract will be awarded and that the period of performance will consist of a period of five (5) years. This applicable NAICS Code is 541710 . This solicitation will be available electronically on or about April 8, 2005. The RFP may be accessed through Internet address: http://rcb.nci.nih.gov/.
