Description
The University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health in cooperation with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders (NIDDK) and the investigators of the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (LABS) consortium is soliciting proposals to serve as the Central Laboratory for the Analyses of Biological Samples. The University of Pittsburgh, Epidemiology Data Center has been funded by the NIDDK to serve as the LABS Data Coordinating Center (DCC). The award will be made as a subcontract under the current grant held by the University of Pittsburgh, (Grant# RFA-DK-03-006) for the project period 9/30/2003 to 8/31/2008 under the Project Title: Bariatric Surgery Clinical Surgery Research Consortium (http://www.niddk.nih.gov/fund/crfo/niddk_archived_initiatives.htm#rfa). LABS is a prospective, longitudinal cohort study with 6 investigative centers: the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (Pennsylvania), Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital and Cornell University (New York), East Carolina Medical Center (North Carolina), University of North Dakota, Neuropsychiatric Research Institute (North Dakota), University of California, Davis (California) and the University of Washington (Washington). The focus of the LABS study is on the role of bariatric surgery in understanding and treating obesity and its complications. Approximately 2,400 patients will be recruited over 3 years and followed for up to 3 years. Samples will be collected preoperatively and at several postoperative time points. Respondents may submit a proposal for performing all of the studies including: fasting insulin, high sensitive C-reactive protein, non-esterified fatty acids, PTH, calcium, 25-OH-vitamin D, vitamin B12, serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, serum ferritin, serum creatinine, serum cystatin, urine creatinine, and urine albumin testing (subcontracting is permitted) that are detailed in the Request for Proposals (RFP) located at URL address: http://www.edc.gsph.pitt.edu/labs/public/centrallab.html This is a federally funded study. As such, any subcontractor chosen will be required to abide by federal subcontract clauses. For those interested in submitting proposals, a non-binding letter of intent should be sent to Deborah Dobransky-Fasiska (DobranskyD@edc.pitt.edu) by the end of business day (Eastern Time) March 31, 2005. The deadline to submit proposals is May 2, 2005. Applications will be accepted by mail, fax, or electronically and must be received no later than May 2, 2005. Evaluation of the proposals will be based on the scientific capabilities of the offerors, costs and other factors as they relate to the needs of the project set forth in the Statement of Work document. Proposals will be evaluated by a peer group of scientists. It is expected that a central laboratory will need to be ready to receive specimens from LABS clinical centers no sooner than July 1, 2005.
